Martin and Suzanne Perkins always dreamed of recapturing the original architecture of their 1903 Colonial Revival Style home. Marty, longtime curator of research at Old World Wisconsin, had big plans for the restoration of his family's home. The initial scope was to provide an addition on the first floor to allow for a larger, more functional kitchen, relocate the 1st floor bathroom and to add a mud room near the back entrance. This lead to a far greater project involving several other areas of their historic home.
Our homeowners had years of historic documentation and research for our project manager and designer, Ryan Menghe to use as precedents and inspiration for the overall design. Such documentation lead to installing a custom Palladian window that was originally located on the west side of the home per photographs dating back to the early 1900s. The decorative fretwork above the grand staircase was brought back to life based on shadow lines and holes in the beams indicating its once magnificent presence. Opening the front den/library mimics the living room cased opening creating a grand front hall entry. In the master bathroom, a brick chimney hidden in the wall was left partially exposed and whitewashed to further blend new with existing. All the mouldings and hardwood floors throughout the home were restored or replicated to their original grandeur. Aside from these distinguished details - the kitchen, pantry, mudroom and bathroom areas endured a complete makeover. This involved an addition to the North side of the home adding modern conveniences while complimenting the unique original style of the home. As the project moved forward, small clues began to reveal themselves to which further solidified the family’s historic documentation.
The greatest honor this project gave us isn't in the project itself, but in the story. Marty Perkins loved history and spent his life searching for the human meaning of each of the historic buildings he brought to life as curator of Old World Wisconsin. Sadly, Marty wasn't able to see his own home restoration. After his untimely passing in 2012, his wife Sue went on to fulfill their dreams. To all of us at Gabor Design Build and throughout Wisconsin, Marty Perkins has become the very thing he worked his life honoring - a beautiful, historical story. Thank you Sue for allowing us to help make both your dreams come true.

Project Manager, Ryan Menghe, developed his passion for Architecture at a young age. He was put to work in the masonry field; working on residential homes throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. Inspired by his roots, he attended UW-Milwaukee where he received a Bachelor Degree of Science in Architecture. After graduation, Ryan worked at local Architecture Firms and Residential Construction companies before coming to Gabor Design Build. Ryan had the opportunity to study abroad to Europe and to see first-hand the breathtaking structures of our past. He really appreciates and was inspired by the Renaissance style; it reminded him of his masonry background with the elements used, emphasis on proportion, and geometry. Ryan’s objective is to utilize his background in construction and the Architectural profession to create a memorable experience for the client. One that is of quality, exceeds expectations, and professional. Throughout Ryan’s architectural and construction career, he has always looked at new and innovative ways to improve the design/construction experience as a whole. Ryan has been inspired throughout his life, but mostly by people. He believes that people have the greatest impact on one’s life.
